Exciting News at Insight Therapies

We are thrilled to announce that our play therapist, Bessie, has now completed her certification in the Learn To Play Therapy approach – a powerful new dimension to our child-centred work here at Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy.

What is Learn To Play Therapy?

Learn To Play Therapy is grounded in decades of clinical research and practice, developed by Karen Stagnitti.
At its heart, this model focuses on pretend play (also known as imaginative or symbolic play) – the kind of play where children use objects as something else, create play scenes, assume roles, and interact with peers in meaning-rich ways.
Key features of the approach:

A child-centred, responsive way of working: the therapist joins the child in play, meets them where they are, responds to their cues and interests.

A focus on the child’s strengths and passions rather than simply teaching them to “fit in.”

A developmental framework that identifies how pretend play evolves and how it links to broader skills: language, self-regulation, problem-solving, social awareness.

A neuro-diversity affirming stance: children are respected and accepted as they are, rather than being encouraged to mask or hide their differences.

From the “For Parents” section:

“Being playful with your child is enjoyable and helps to strengthen the bond between you and your child.”
“For some children, play may be very difficult … supporting them within their sphere of interests helps to bring a deeper engagement and joy in play…” learntoplaytherapy.com

In short, Learn To Play Therapy provides not just sessions, but a meaningful pathway for children to grow their capacity for spontaneous, intentional, self-initiated play – and through that, to strengthen their social, emotional, cognitive and regulatory skills.

What this means for families at Insight Therapies

With Bessie now certified in this approach, we are able to bring this specialised way of working into our service offerings. What does that look like in practice?

Tailored play-based sessions: Bessie will be working alongside children, using their interests, harnessing strengths, and scaffolding pretend-play capacity in a warm, responsive environment.

Parent/carer collaboration: Rather than play being something that happens to the child, we’ll actively involve you – the parent or carer — in supporting your child’s play development, strengthening the connection between home, therapy and day-to-day life.

Neuro-affirming practice: Whether your child is neuro-typical or neuro-divergent, this approach honours their unique being and supports their growth without asking them to hide or conform in ways that may be harmful.

Broader developmental gains: Because pretend play acts as a foundation for language, narrative thinking, self-regulation and social engagement, our work in this space is not just about play – it is about fostering resilience, autonomy and joy in play and beyond.

Why we’re excited

As a practice committed to high-quality, inclusive, and evidence-informed support for children and families, this certification is a wonderful addition to our team’s expertise. We believe that play is not just a fun activity — it is a meaningful pathway for development, healing and connection.

Having Bessie skilled in Learn To Play Therapy means we can offer something more: a way for children to explore, grow, experiment, adapt and thrive – all through the lens of play, in a way that honours who they are.
We are proud of Bessie’s commitment and look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on the children and families we work with.

What to do next

If you have a child who:

finds play hard, or doesn’t seem to take off with pretend play

enjoys playing but you’d like to see them engaging more with peers, extending their play ideas, initiating play more often

is neuro-divergent and you want support for play in a respectful, affirming way
then please reach out. Bessie is ready to bring this approach to life at Insight Therapies.

If you’re seeking greater clarity and understanding around your mental health and how to move forward with purpose and joy, individual counselling (or one-on-one therapy) can help you unpack what lays beneath the struggles and provide you with the strategies and skills you need to navigate through those challenging life experiences.

A qualified counsellor or social worker specialising in mental health can assist you with managing a range of problems including PTSD, Anger Management, Anxiety, Depression, Substance Abuse & Addiction, Eating Disorders, Grief & Loss, Stress Management & Relationship problems.

Let’s take a look at the most common reasons how individual therapy can benefit your outlook on life and create a more positive mindset.

1. It’s All About You

Having a dedicated and qualified therapist that is focused entirely on you and your unique needs, experiences and goals ensures you have a safe and meaningful therapeutic space to begin your journey to healing. Someone who is trained and experienced in understanding the complexities that life often throws at us and the impacts of traumatic experiences on our day to day functioning is a must but also ensures that you receive personalised and effective support.

Whether you need some clarity around life goals, relationship issues or healing from Whether you need some clarity around life goals, relationship issues or healing

2. Confidential & Private

During a personal counselling session, everything you share with the therapist is 100% confidential and private unless there is risk to yourself or others in which case your therapist will speak to you about sharing their concerns with those who can ensure your safety.

If you don’t find group therapy comfortable; or feel ashamed or embarrassed about sharing your issues in front of other people, getting one on one attention with a personal counsellor can be an extremely beneficial way to experience emotional healing in a safe and relaxing environment.

3. Self Paced Sessions

During a personal counselling session, you can work at your own pace with minimal pressure. As there is no one size fits all approach, you can expect the counsellor to work around what feels right for you.

Whether you choose to work at a slower pace or have more frequent sessions to get to the root cause of the problem, every counselling session is tailored to suit your exact concerns and timeframe – with no pre-determined outcome.

4. Understand Your Emotions & Thought Patterns Better

A personal counsellor can help you look at your issues from a different angle, offering a fresh perspective on how to handle life situations more effectively. They also help you identify and understand your emotional triggers, providing non-biased advice and recommendations based on your personal situation.

Close-up photo of a teenage girl’s hands with fingers crossed nervously. She is in a therapy session with her psychotherapist.

5. Address Multiple Concerns

A professional counsellor is trained to assist with a broad<s>er</s> range of issues, giving you complete confidence in addressing all your concerns. Whether it’s a targeted set of sessions or ongoing therapy, complex problems can be processed and managed effectively helping you to find peace, safety an harmony in your life.

6. Compassionate & Nurturing Approach

One of the most important qualities to look for in a personal counsellor is the ability to connect with you and your unique needs in a caring and supporting way.

A good therapist will allow you to share your emotions and experiences in a safe environment, while supporting you to work through what has been holding you back with compassion and understanding.

7. Develop Vital Coping Strategies & Skills

Working one-on-one with a personal counsellor can help address deep seated issues that may be holding you back from living your best life. They can also provide you with positive coping strategies that will give you clarity over your problems and help you tackle these issues head on. If you’ve been suffering emotionally or struggling with your mental health and have not yet sought professional help, investing in yourself is the first step towards addressing those difficult experiences that may be steering your life down a difficult path.

Personal counselling can provide you with a safe, non-judgemental space that allows you to express your emotions and find resolution. Having a trained professional to guide and support you can make all the difference in managing stress, depression and anxiety – empowering you to take control of those parts of your life that may currently be controlling you.

At Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy, we welcome you exactly as you are, whilst harmoniously creating permission for the person you want to be. Get in touch with us today to arrange a consultation.

Anxiety can be a highly debilitating condition to live with, especially if left untreated, even taking over your whole life, leaving you feeling helpless and out of control.

If managing your anxiety is a constant daily struggle, seeking professional counselling can be a healthy way to identify and learn to manage any triggers associated with your anxiety related trauma.

In this blog, we’ll explore how seeking anxiety treatment can help keep those chronic emotions in check and how speaking to a therapist about your anxiety is the key to rebuilding your ability to function successfully on a day to day basis, but also to develop strong and healthy self-esteem.

What is Relational Trauma?

Let’s begin by understanding what relational trauma is and how it can erode your self-worth causing low self-esteem and a negative self-image.

Trauma often stems from a deeply personal experience that has left you with a fragmented self of identity. Also known as ‘attachment trauma’, it usually manifests as a direct experience from long term emotional, physical and/or mental neglect– particularly with people closest to you such as parents, siblings, friends, trusted caregivers and romantic relationships.

This type of trauma has a detrimental effect on your sense of safety and also on your ability to hold a healthy self-image; causing a range of disruptive behaviours and a low sense of self-worth or value – ultimately resulting in very low self-esteem.

Some common causes we see in connection to trauma related cases includes dysfunctional family dynamics, repeated experiences of abandonment, family violence, substance abuse, sexual abuse, violation of trust from those in parental roles, and inconsistent adult behaviour within the family unit (blurred physical, mental and emotional boundaries). All these different scenarios can leave the survivor with hyper intense feelings of being unlovable, unsafe and unwanted.

At Insight Therapies in Albury Wodonga, we specialise in helping those affected by trauma and anxiety heal. We do this by tailoring our person centred approaches to your unique needs in order to achieve long term, sustainable relief from common anxiety symptoms related to trauma.

For more information on relational trauma and its impact on individual behaviour, please visit https://www.phoenixaustralia.org/your-recovery/effects-of-trauma-anxiety/

The young adult university student talks with her mature peer about her previous experiences.

7 Strategies to Help You Overcome Relational Trauma

Speak to Insight Therapies in Albury Wodonga

As qualified mental health professionals, we provide an emotionally safe environment and supportive therapeutic relationship to assist in your recovery. By talking and building a bond with one of our trusted anxiety therapists, it provides a therapeutic avenue to explore your past traumas, while working through the many complex emotions and trauma-based responses you may be facing.

Grounding & Mindfulness Exercises

Engaging in regular meditation and relaxation exercises are positive ways to regulate your emotions and diffuse some of those trauma related patterns. It’s a highly effective self-care strategy that can help you tune in to the present moment, while helping minimise feelings of overwhelm and despair.

Practice Patience with Yourself

By cultivating compassion and kindness towards yourself on regular basis, you will notice a marked improvement in your overall self-esteem and self-image.

This practice can also assist in keeping negative beliefs at bay resulting from past relational trauma and dysfunctional experiences.

Develop Healthy Boundaries

Maintaining healthy boundaries with those around you is vital to your self-preservation and wellbeing. By asserting your needs in a kind and respectful way, you are able to develop healthier connections and manage relationships better.

Emotional Regulation

Navigating raw, intense emotions can be debilitating to deal with if you don’t have the right coping mechanisms available. Developing the skills to handle those difficult emotional triggers when they arise can be a useful way to stay on track when life gets too difficult.

Explore Trust Issues

With relational trauma comes deep seated trust issues – they both go hand in hand. Working on guided exercises to help rebuild trust in yourself is key to overcoming negative belief patterns and trauma-based behaviour, resulting in healthier relationships with those around you.

Build a Strong Support Network

Seeking support from those closest to you such as family, friends, anxiety therapist, school or community group is a major stepping stone to your healing and recovery. Not only will this help you feel more connected and understood, you’ll feel much less isolated with a strong support network of positive people around you.

What are our neurodivergent group sessions?

Essentially, they’re structured sessions where teenagers and kids come together to engage in activities and exercises designed to enhance their self esteem, build and celebrate identity, create connections and improve overall well-being. Led by our experienced team who are highly regarded counsellors and social workers, these groups promote positive changes in confidence, identity, behaviour, cognition, and emotional regulation.

Here’s a quick overview of the key benefits these groups to consider:

✨ Enhanced emotional regulation: Adolescence can be a trying time, marked by big emotions and heightened stress levels. Our neurodivergent groups provide a supportive environment where teens can learn effective strategies for managing their emotions such as anger management, reducing anxiety, and building resilience.

✨Improved social skills: Interacting with peers in a structured setting allows teenagers and kids to hone their social skills and develop meaningful connections. Through group activities and discussions, participants learn valuable communication techniques, empathy, and teamwork—all essential skills for navigating the complexities of interpersonal relationships.

✨Boosted confidence & self-esteem: By participating in activities that challenge them in a safe and supportive environment, teenagers and kids gain confidence in their abilities and develop a positive self-image. Celebrating achievements and milestones within the group fosters a sense of accomplishment and reinforces their self-worth.

✨Stress reduction & relaxation: In today’s hyper-connected world, it’s easy for teenagers and kids to feel overwhelmed by academic pressures, social expectations, and digital distractions. Our groups often incorporate relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, yoga and deep breathing, to help unwind, feel grounded and practice how to find that balance in times of need.

✨Academic support & cognitive enhancement: Our groups incorporate brain-training exercises and educational activities designed to sharpen cognitive skills such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. By stimulating these neural pathways, we can enhance learning outcomes and academic performance.

✨Sense of belonging & community: Adolescence is a time of exploration and self-discovery, but it can also be a period of loneliness and isolation. Our neurodivergent groups offer teenagers and kids who often feel very disconnected and ‘different’ a sense of belonging as they connect with others who share similar experiences and interests. This sense of community strengthens their support network and provides a valuable source of encouragement and friendship.

Group sessions here at Insight Therapies harness the power of inclusion and acceptance, supporting the holistic development of teenagers and kids in today’s often challenging world. By guiding youth and providing them with a nurturing environment for growth and exploration, we allow them to grow within themselves and build a strong sense of self-worth. As parents, educators, and community leaders, we want what is best for the children in our care. By investing in these programs that nurture the whole person rather than just focusing on finding a solution to a ‘problem’, we can make a world of difference in the lives of those we care about, paving the way for a brighter, happier and more fulfilled future.

Benefits of AAT

The benefits of AAT for individuals have been shown to include consistent improvements over four main areas:

Autism spectrum symptoms (e.g., positive social interactions and communication)

Medical difficulties (e.g., lowering of heart rate and blood pressure and increased motor skills & co-ordination)

Behavioural problems (e.g., reduction in verbal resistance, aggression, violence & increased compliance with rules)

Emotional well-being (e.g., reduction in anxiety, fear & depression

Research Findings

Findings from research on the outcomes of AAT suggests that this form of therapy is a calming and engaging approach, that improves health conditions. AAT has been found to offer unique benefits for encouraging social development, positively influencing an individual’s experiences of anxiety and increasing engagement in daily activities and self-care. Additionally, by building positive and trusting relationships with therapy animals, individuals are able to learn trust and skills through their interactions which then functions as an ‘emotional bridge’ to support the expansion of learnt skills into relationships with others in their social worlds.

Outcomes

The ability to engage safely with another being and practice social and emotional skills without the fear of judgement or rejection is a powerful tool to build confidence in a sometimes overwhelming social world. Trained therapy dogs such as Bacardi and Kaluah have repeatedly shown their openness to helping others and provided a safe social experience where care, compassion and acceptance is given freely. There is no need to fear rejection with this patient and loving duo, they love to help others and to share their strength to help ground you through difficult times. This grounding then allows you to engage in more open emotional expression, processing what has in the past been too painful to express. By having this opportunity, you can move forward from what has been holding you back so you can move forward into the future and thrive.

If you’re curious about the therapeutic benefits of including animals in your therapy or education setting, you may be wondering what the difference is between Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT), Animal Assisted Education (AAE) and Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI), (or even Animal Assisted Activity (AAA), and which is most suitable for your clients, patients or students.

Let’s unpack the differences so you can feel confident you’re choosing the right animal assisted pathway for your setting.

Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI)

Animal Assisted Interventions are goal-oriented and structured interventions that intentionally incorporate animals in health, education and human services settings, for the purpose of therapeutic gains and improved health and wellness. Think of AAI as an umbrella term – Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT), Animal Assisted Education (AAE), and Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) are all forms of Animal Assisted Interventions.

The animal may be part of a volunteer therapy animal team working under the direction of a professional, or an animal that belongs to the professional themselves.

Animals are seen differently by clients because they have no ulterior motive. Unlike a therapist or a teacher, the animal is not “required” to be nice to the client. Clients who have experienced abuse by other humans are especially aware of the motivations of others and may have learnt that humans can’t always be trusted. For these clients, the inclusion of animals in therapeutic and educational settings can promote feelings of trust and safety and help to build self esteem and perceptions of worth.

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

Animal Assisted Therapy is goal-oriented, planned, structured, and documented. It is implemented by health and human service professionals within the scope of their own practice. This last piece is crucial, as a therapy animal is only a therapy animal when used by a professional who is qualified to deliver therapeutic services.

A wide variety of disciplines may incorporate AAT, including dentists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, doctors, nurses, social workers, speech therapists, or other mental health professionals.

The benefits of AAT stem from its strong association with safe relational experiences, making it especially useful for client groups such as those who have experienced trauma, those on the Autism spectrum, young people and adolescents, clients who experience trust or relationship issues, and clients who experience depression and anxiety. Being able to engage with another being where felt safety and meaningful connection is experienced brings a wealth of benefits for healing.

Animal Assisted Education (AAE)

Animal Assisted Education is a goal-oriented, planned, and structured intervention within a school setting, and is similar to AAT in that it requires a trained and certified animal to work alongside a qualified education or wellbeing professional.

The focus of the AAE activities is on academic goals, prosocial skills and cognitive functioning, with student progress being both measured and documented.

The animal can be the subject (topic) of the learning plan or a participant in the learning plan to enhance learning outcomes.

AAE can be delivered across a range of age groups, including within preschools, primary schools, high schools and universities.

Animal Assisted Activities (AAA)

Animal Assisted Activities provide opportunities for motivational, educational, and/or recreational benefits to enhance quality of life. While more informal in nature, these activities are delivered by a specially trained professional, paraprofessional, and/or volunteer, in partnership with an animal that meets specific criteria for suitability.

Including animals in your work in a safe and ethical way

Each of these different ways of including animals in your work as an educator or wellbeing professional can enhance your practice and offer significant benefits to those you work with.

It’s essential that anyone offering Animal Assisted Therapy, Education or other Activities is suitably qualified and skilled to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved – the client and the animal and handler team. The Professional Practice Standards and Code of Ethics (developed for Australian providers by Animal Therapies Limited) outline these responsibilities in greater detail.

Additionally, if you would like to learn more about implementing AAT and AAE into your work in an effective and ethical way, we cover this in-depth in ‘Canine Assisted Therapy in Practice’.

Since including therapy animals in my practice, I have seen so many clients experience profound growth and healing. This is why I’m passionate about supporting mental health professionals and educators to implement Animal Assisted Therapy in their own settings.

It is incredibly powerful to witness the confidence and connection that grows between my dogs and individual clients – some of whom have not felt connected in a really long time.

The specific benefits of animals in therapy depend on the individual client and their needs, and may include:

Skill development – utilising therapy animals to build confidence or distress tolerance

Demonstrating what it is like to engage in a relationship with another being that is equal, shared and respectful

The opportunity to work through attachment issues and to communicate in a way they may not have been able to before.

So, let’s take a closer look at what Animal Assisted Therapy is, the therapeutic applications and benefits, and how as practitioners, we can apply AAT to support meaningful outcomes for our clients.

What is Animal Assisted Therapy?

AAT is an effective therapeutic modality, where trained therapy animal and handler teams draw on the therapeutic benefits of the human-animal bond, to assist clients to achieve meaningful and lasting change.

As with other therapeutic frameworks, AAT is goal-oriented, planned, structured, and evidence-based. The therapy can take many forms, depending on the client, the animal and the goals for treatment.

Importantly, to use AAT within your practice as a health or human services professional, both you and your animal will need to have completed a certification process.

“A therapy animal is only considered a therapy animal when used by a professional who is qualified to deliver Animal Assisted Therapy.”

AAT is used by a wide range of disciplines, including social workers, counsellors, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and doctors.

What are the therapeutic benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy?

It is commonly accepted that the inclusion of dogs in a therapy space plays a significant role in increasing client motivation to engage in therapy.

However, the benefits go far beyond motivation.

Numerous studies (listed in Sources) have found that when skilfully integrated into client sessions, AAT:

Improves outcomes and promotes client engagement

Enhances client experiences of trust and safety in sessions

Builds rapport and relationship with the therapist more rapidly to enable a more efficient therapeutic alliance

Initiates and strengthens the bond between the therapist and client, as well as becomes a tool to encourage positive therapeutic changes

Keeps the client focused on the present moment to enable the exploration of long-standing issues that may be too painful to discuss without an animal present

Provides an experience of unconditional support and acceptance that can be difficult for clients in a vulnerable state of mind to seek out from other human beings

Provides emotional regulation opportunities through touch and relationship

Provides model for appropriate language, discipline, and behavioural learning

Provides model for learning to establish consistent boundaries and expectations and develops improved communication skills

Provides immediate and non-judgemental feedback for pro-vs anti-social behaviours

Provides relational interactions to support the assessment of attachment style & relational skills

Provides experiential and process learning opportunities for interpersonal development, trauma recovery, developing understanding of self and others and improving assertiveness.

When looking at the evidence-based benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy, we see that the inclusion of therapy animals can support clients to:

Increase their capacity to self-regulate

Lower cortisol levels (stress hormone) and release oxytocin (happy hormone) – resulting in a reduced stress response

Increase access to the emotional centre of the brain – supporting clients to process difficult emotions, experiences or behaviours that may previously have blocked them from engaging meaningfully in therapy.

AAT also offers opportunities for tactile stimulation, co-regulation and mirroring, as well as experiences of emotional bonding and new opportunities to engage in a healthy interpersonal relationship where care, trust and predictability are core elements.

AAT and the therapeutic alliance

Key to any therapeutic outcomes is the relationship that is created within the therapeutic alliance. When we include animals in our practice, we have double the impact – we have the relationship the client is experiencing with the therapist, and we have the relationship that the client is experiencing with the animal. With interpersonal trauma, sometimes there are barriers and our clients are hesitant to trust another human being. This is particularly relevant for a child who may have experienced neglect or abuse at the hands of a caregiver. Experiencing two safe, nurturing and respectful relationships helps the client feel safe. When the client is feeling safe (in fact, only when they are feeling safe), they are able to explore and process internal states and engage in therapy in a meaningful way.

Through integrating AAT into our work we can promote a grounded and regulated environment to assist client’s capacity to explore issues, emotions or behaviours which may have been too difficult to express previously. Regulating the nervous system through touch, connection and co-regulation lowers defence mechanisms and allows clients to work through problems within a safe and nurturing environment, rewiring the body’s felt experience associated with their trauma.

Animal Assisted Education

Similarly to Animal Assisted Therapy, studies have found that including suitably trained dogs in schools can provide benefits for student wellbeing, including:

Physiologically, the presence of a dog has been found to significantly lower behavioural, emotional and verbal distress in children when participating in a mindly stressful activity

Lowered blood pressure and heart rate has been observed when a child reads aloud in the presence of a therapy dog

Dogs contribute to student self-esteem by providing a ‘friend’ to bond with and love in the classroom setting

Increased student attention, responsiveness and cooperation with an adult when a dog is present in the classroom.

You can learn more about the benefits of Animal Assisted Education and how to implement it in your educational setting through our self-paced, online course: Canine-Assisted Therapy in Practice.

What are the ethical considerations for implementing AAT?

Canine Assisted Therapy is about so much more than having a dog with good manners. As with any other therapeutic framework, AAT is about the outcome for the client. It’s essential to understand exactly how to work with both the animal and the client for a meaningful, healthy and ethical outcome for all.

Something I noticed when I was developing my own animal assisted therapy practice, was the tendency to skip over the conversation about ethical considerations. Many of the courses I looked into didn’t talk about what it was like for our animals to be working in the therapy space, or the expectations and responsibilities that exist when working with animals in practice.

As with any other form of therapy, there is a code of ethics and a set of practice standards that apply to anyone using Animal Assisted Therapy.

These exist to ensure that the therapeutic relationship is healthy and safe for everyone – the clients, the animals and the therapists. They include:

Animal welfare

The welfare and wellbeing of any therapy animal is a top priority. This includes considering factors such as the animal’s health, temperament and suitability for therapy work. Animal handlers and therapists should ensure that the animals are provided with proper care, nutrition, exercise, rest and veterinary attention.

Consent and autonomy

Informed consent must be obtained from clients before incorporating animals into their therapy sessions. Clients should be fully aware of the involvement of a therapy animal in their treatment and have the autonomy to choose whether they are comfortable with it or not. This includes discussing any potential risks, allergies or fears relating to animals.

Professional competence

To deliver AAT, you must have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to work with both animals and clients. This includes certification in animal assisted therapy, as well as understanding animal behaviour, body language, and appropriate handling techniques. Maintaining up to date knowledge and participating in ongoing professional development is seen as part of professional competence.

There are additional practice standards and ethical considerations, including Confidentiality and Privacy, Professional Boundaries, and Safety and Risk Management.

These ethical considerations are an essential part of maintaining a safe, effective and ethical practice of Animal Assisted Therapy, that prioritises the wellbeing of both clients and animals.

If you’re interested to learn more about setting up an ethically-based program for any client you’re working with, we cover this in-depth in ‘Canine Assisted Therapy in Practice’. It includes 31 self-paced lessons, with:

About the Author

Anita Geary is an experienced Animal Assisted Therapist, based in Wodonga, Victoria. A committee member of Animal Therapies Limited (ATL), Anita has been recognised for her ongoing contribution to the development of the profession in Australia, and in 2023, she presented at the ATL conference (Brisbane), on the use of AAT when working with clients who have experienced interpersonal trauma.

In her role as Lead Therapist (ACA Registered Counsellor & AASW Accredited Social Worker) at Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy, Anita combines quality therapy with her fully trained and certified therapy dogs Bacardi and Kaluah, to engage her clients by delivering a therapeutic team of self, client and therapy dog.

Anita first began the process of AAT certification for both herself and her then 3-year-old Labrador Bacardi, in 2019, after noticing a natural longing for Bacardi to offer comfort to others. Anita recognised that these innate skills demonstrated by Bacardi, when combined with her experience of working successfully with adults and children who have experienced trauma, could offer children, young people and adults a meaningful and highly valuable therapeutic experience.

Since the beginning of Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy in early 2020, Bacardi’s daughter Kaluah has also completed her certification and now joins the team with her gentle nature and her willingness to share her calm to promote positive emotional experiences for those who work with her.

Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy is the first and only canine-assisted therapy practice in the Albury Wodonga area and have been featured for their support to those in need by Prime7 news, The Border Mail and ABC Goulburn radio. Read More.

Benefits of AAT

The benefits of AAT for individuals have been shown to include consistent improvements over four main areas:

* Autism spectrum symptoms (e.g., positive social interactions and communication)

* Medical difficulties (e.g., lowering of heart rate and blood pressure and increased motor skills & co-ordination)

* Behavioural problems (e.g., reduction in verbal resistance, aggression, violence & increased compliance with rules)

* Emotional well-being (e.g., reduction in anxiety, fear & depression)
